Rooftop pool at Casa Bugó Arsenal in Getsemaní, Cartagena

Getsemaní is Cartagena's liveliest neighbourhood, and it shows best after sunset. It sits right next to the Walled City and is easy to explore on foot. This is what we recommend to our guests at Casa Bugó Arsenal, on Calle del Arsenal.

1. Start with a sunset from above

Before heading out, go up to a rooftop and watch the sky turn orange over the bay. At Casa Bugó Arsenal we watch it from the rooftop pool: the best way to start the night.

2. Plaza de la Trinidad

The heart of the neighbourhood. At dusk it fills with locals, travellers, musicians and food vendors. Sit for a while in front of the church and watch Getsemaní life go by.

3. Murals and colourful streets

Wander the streets around the square: murals, hanging umbrellas and bunting, colourful doors and balconies full of flowers. At night, with the lights on, the neighbourhood has a different charm.

4. Street food

Try the local favourites: arepa de huevo, empanadas, patacones, fruit salpicón or a coconut lemonade. There are stalls in the square and on the corners for a quick bite.

5. Salsa and live music

Getsemaní is salsa land. Don't know how to dance? No problem: everyone joins in here.

6. A walk to the Old City

From Getsemaní you can walk into the Old City past Parque del Centenario and the Clock Tower. A lovely stroll to end the night.

Tips from locals

  • Stick to lively streets, and take a taxi when you head back late.
  • Carry little cash and only what you need; leave the rest at the hotel.
  • Light clothes and comfortable shoes: the streets are cobbled and it stays warm at night.
  • Where to stay: Casa Bugó Arsenal is a boutique house with a rooftop pool, breakfast included and 24-hour reception, right on Calle del Arsenal: step out into Getsemaní's nightlife and walk back home.
