What to Do in Getsemaní by Day

CASA BUGÓ ARSENAL Hotel Boutique

Murals, Plaza de la Trinidad, local flavours and a walk to the Walled City

Breakfast with arepa and coffee at Casa Bugó Arsenal, Getsemaní

At night Getsemaní is all music and movement. By day it's a different neighbourhood: calm, full of colour and perfect for an unhurried walk. This is how we explore it with our guests from Casa Bugó Arsenal, on Calle del Arsenal.

1. Start early, with a good breakfast

Mornings are the best time to walk: it's cooler, quieter and the light is perfect for photos. Breakfast is included at Casa Bugó Arsenal, so you head out full of energy.

2. Murals and street art

Getsemaní is an open-air gallery. Wander its streets and alleys to see murals that tell the story of the neighbourhood and its people. To understand them better, there are guided street-art tours.

3. Plaza de la Trinidad, without the crowds

The same square that fills up at night is, by day, a calm place to sit in the shade in front of the church and watch local life.

4. Balconies, doors and details

Look up: wooden balconies with flowers, colourful doors, old door knockers and umbrellas or bunting hanging over the streets. Every corner is a photo.

5. Local flavours

Try a coconut lemonade, a tropical fruit juice or an ice lolly to beat the heat. For lunch, look for Caribbean coastal food: fried fish, coconut rice and patacón.

6. A midday break

Between 12 and 3 the sun is strong. It's the time to head back, cool off in the rooftop pool and rest.

7. Afternoon: Parque del Centenario and the pier

In the afternoon, walk to Parque del Centenario, between Getsemaní and the Old City, and on to the Muelle de los Pegasos and the Clock Tower to enter the Walled City.

Tips from locals

  • Hat, sunscreen and water at all times.
  • Comfortable shoes: you walk a lot and some kerbs are high.
  • Ask permission before photographing residents or their front doors.
  • Carry cash in small notes for street stalls.
  • Where to stay: Casa Bugó Arsenal is a boutique house with a rooftop pool, breakfast included and 24-hour reception, right on Calle del Arsenal.
